Implementation of Logistics Support System (LSS) in Lebanon |
|
Beirut., June 2006.
The
Emergency Preparedness and Humanitarian Action programme of the WHO Regional
Office for the Eastern
Mediterranean
(WHO/EMRO) is promoting and implementing the
LSS/Logistics Support System in the region. LSS is developed by six UN
agencies, and aims to strengthen national capacities for responding to disaster
situations.
The
implementation of LSS in the Eastern Mediterranean region has been officially
launched in Lebanon, after the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health requested WHO
for technical support in setting up LSS at the Ministry Central Drug Warehouse
and pharmaceutical warehouses in Quarantine area in Beirut. During a 2 week
mission, LSS expert Victor Martinez from Colombia established LSS in the Ministry’s
warehouse thanks to support of the warehouse staff and management, and key
persons within WHO Lebanon. LSS is a tool that can be used efficiently on a
daily basis in the supplies and helps to increase transparency and
accountability in the management of supplies and donations when received.

March 2007, Bolivia Floods |
|
Bolivia’s worst flooding in 25 years has produced at least 350,000 victims in eight of the nine Departments of the country. This has lead to the sending of a very large amount of humanitarian aid for the flood victims which in turn lead to the installing of the LSS/SUMA System at various locations to receive and manage this help.
At this time the System is installed in the Santa Cruz Departmental Center for Emergency Operations in the warehouses of Civil Defense and in the warehouse of the First Lady’s Prefecture in Santa Cruz. Very soon, in a matter of hours, the System will be installed in other dependencies in La Paz and other Departments and affected areas. The Emergency Preparedness Program of the PAHO along with FUNDESUMA and in coordination with local and national authorities, are readying the sending of a mission of experts in the LSS/SUMA to support the implementing of the System in the different locations in which it is needed and to give logistics advice to authorities and organizations. The White Helmets of Argentina amongst other organizations have given their support. Photo Gallery / More Information... |
